Our Governors

Our Governing Board decides matters of general policy and oversees the running of the school. The board consists of a nominated governor from the Local Authority, a governor elected by staff, three governors elected by the parents, four co-opted governors and the headteacher. Governors have a four year term of office.

I am pleased to be part of the governing body, working as part Hungerford Primary School to deliver the high standard of education that our children deserve. I am an industry certified telecommunications engineer, a self-taught software developer and I run my own business. I take responsibility for day to day running of my company, management of its finances and professional development of its employees (i.e. me!). I worked previously as Clerk to the Governing body of John O Gaunt school for over 3 years, and have been a governor at Hungerford Primary for over 3 years.

I have a child currently at the school and two who are now at secondary school after both enjoying their time with HPS.  I've been involved in the PTA in various forms over the years and currently head up the Year Rep programme.  I work full time but am still very active in the local area.  I'm very enthusiastic about being able to offer my support and skills to this wonderful school, whose values and ethos I share.

  • David Mayer - Headteacher

Having finished my teacher training in 1988 I went to work in Boston, USA for a couple of years before beginning my teaching career in Swindon in 1990. After five years here I moved to Ramsbury Primary School followed by a deputy headship at Great Bedwyn. This led to my first headship at Drayton Primary School in Oxfordshire. After leading the school during a time were we went from inadequate to good, I became the head at St Dunstan Primary School in Wiltshire which led eventually to my becoming Head at Hungerford. I am married to Polly, a reception teacher and have two daughters; Tess who is 16 and Beth who is 14. They both go to St John’s Academy in Marlborough. We have lived in Marlborough for five years after 14 years in Hungerford so I know the town quite well. I am looking forward to leading the school as we secure our Ofsted “good” rating and move towards becoming even better.

  • Jane Butler - Staff Governor

I have lived in Hungerford since the age of 18.  After leaving College, I worked as a PA for a local Estate Agent, Knight Frank.   I left there to start my family and took some time out of work.   When my children started school, I began working at Hungerford Primary School as a Learning Support Assistant.  It was during this time that I decided I wanted to become a teacher.   I began to study for a Science degree with the Open University, combining my studies with bringing up a young family.   I left Hungerford Primary School in 1999 to attend Oxford Brookes University to complete my teaching qualifications with a PGCE.   My first teaching job was in a mixed Y3/4 class at Francis Baily School in Thatcham.   I was then asked to apply for a Y1 vacancy at Hungerford Primary School the following year and there I continued my teaching career.  During my time at Hungerford Primary, I have gained promotion, initially as KS1 team leader, then Assistant Head before becoming Deputy Headteacher (with a one term spell as Acting Headteacher). My family are very important to me and my spare time is often spent with my two grandchildren, Alfie and Mylo and my new granddaughter Xavi.   I also enjoy spending time with my friends, visiting the theatre, cinema and finding lovely places to eat.  I am also an avid reader and love to travel.

  • Jan Loughlin - Co-opted Governor

I am currently a director of a Community Interest Company working to promote participation in sport and physical activity in the local area.  This includes the Breakfast and After School Clubs at the school.  I am a child carer with over a decade’s experience with children from 0 to 16 years.  I am also a sports coach with specific training in basketball, netball, dodgeball and tag rugby.  I feel motivated to help the school achieve its plans to improve and create long term success for its pupils.

  • Jane Whittles - Co-opted Governor

My family and I have moved back to the UK after living in Australia for the last 14 years.  We now live in Great Bedwyn and are enjoying the beautiful English countryside.  I have two sons, my 8-year-old has just started at our local primary school and my 11-year-old has started Year 7 at St John's.   I have seen different approaches to schooling through our time in Australia and I am keen to share some of my learnings with Hungerford Primary.  I am particularly interested in children's emotional welfare and ensuring school is a fun place to learn and be the best they can be.  I have spent the last 20 years working for various international companies within the area of marketing and I am currently undertaking a contract role in Public Relations for a company in Pewsey.
