Governors have a four year term of office.

Meet our Governors

  • Jane Butler - Staff Governor

I have lived in Hungerford since the age of 18.  After leaving College, I worked as a PA for a local Estate Agent, Knight Frank.   I left there to start my family and took some time out of work.   When my children started school, I began working at Hungerford Primary School as a Learning Support Assistant.  It was during this time that I decided I wanted to become a teacher.   I began to study for a Science degree with the Open University, combining my studies with bringing up a young family.   I left Hungerford Primary School in 1999 to attend Oxford Brookes University to complete my teaching qualifications with a PGCE.   My first teaching job was in a mixed Y3/4 class at Francis Baily School in Thatcham.   I was then asked to apply for a Y1 vacancy at Hungerford Primary School the following year and there I continued my teaching career.  During my time at Hungerford Primary, I have gained promotion, initially as KS1 team leader, then Assistant Head before becoming Deputy Headteacher (with a one term spell as Acting Headteacher). My family are very important to me and my spare time is often spent with my two grandchildren, Alfie and Mylo and my new granddaughter Xavi.   I also enjoy spending time with my friends, visiting the theatre, cinema and finding lovely places to eat.  I am also an avid reader and love to travel.

  • Jay Armstrong - Chair of Governors

I moved to Hungerford in 2009 after marrying my lovely wife Helen, who introduced me to our beautiful market town.  Our daughter, Sophie, is currently in Year 1 at HPS and enjoying learning with her teachers and classmates.  It is so refreshing to see students who are so happy and looking forward to spending the day learning.   I was born and raised in Texas and regularly slow smoke a decent BBQ brisket or ribs to keep in touch with my roots.  I earned my BBA at Texas A&M University with a focus in Business Analysis.  I've always been the geeky, tech obsessed kid.  From there, I joined the corporate information technology world spending many years at IBM.  After moving to the UK, I moved into the cyber security space which is quite active to say the least.  I lead a Pan-European services team as well as head up our digital customer experience program.  I have been a long standing member of the St. Lawrence Church PCC and choir, recently stepping aside from the choir to take on a role in the Sunday School team.

I hope my skills and experiences can help Hungerford Primary School in shaping our future generation to take action to achieve their dreams.  I've always had a love of learning and feel privileged to be part of a team whose ethos is to inspire and prepare our children for their life-long love of learning.

  • Katie Hopkins - Vice Chair of Governors

I moved to Hungerford at the start of 2016 and immediately felt settled within the community. My son has been so very happy at Hungerford Primary School, and he will be sad to leave at the end of this year. My aim as a Governor is to ensure that all local children have a similarly positive experience of learning, of challenge and of optimism.

My background is in offender rehabilitation within the Criminal Justice System – quite different from working with children! My role means I work with troubled, disadvantaged and vulnerable people, to help them develop skills, tools and social networks to steer them towards positive pro-social lives. I am hopeful that my experience of working in a therapeutic environment that provides challenge and support in equal measure means that I can support HPS to continue thriving and flourishing.

I work as a research scientist, with a focus on seismology and atmospheric acoustics. Technical governance is a large part of my job, and I hope to use these skills to help shape school policy decisions. I have volunteered as a governor as I’m keen to help Hungerford Primary School succeed in its aim to provide high quality education for all pupils.

  • Belinda Exelby - Co-opted Governor

Having settled happily in Hungerford since moving here four years ago, I am keen to be involved in and contribute to the local community. I believe strongly that all children have a right to a quality education and I support the ethos and values adopted by HPS as a means of ensuring this for its students. Although I have no direct background in education, I hope that the skills I have acquired during my career in international relations, particularly in terms of project management, negotiation and problem solving, will be useful to the work of the Board of Governors. I am delighted to be part of the team and to be able to support the continued positive development of HPS.

I have since worked as a Teacher of History & Politics at a nearby co-educational full boarding since 2014, where I have also been a Head of Year and an Assistant Housemaster in a boys’ boarding house.

I have already worked with local schools through community outreach programmes and have also established a partnership with a school in India. With the experience as a practicing classroom teacher and pastoral lead, I look forward to supporting the fantastic staff at Hungerford and ensure pupil progress is maximised for all who attend.
