Poetry Together Afternoon in London
Seven Year 5 pupils, Mrs Allen & Mr Mayer, along with 4 residents from Hungerford Care Home & their carers travelled to Eaton Square School in Piccadilly to take part in an event ‘Poetry Together’. The initiative is led by the author & broadcaster Gyles Brandreth, whose project it is to unite young and older people together to recite a poem they have learnt off by heart. There were four other schools with their care home residents also taking part. The Duchess of Cornwall was guest of honour at the event and joined pupils from Knightsbridge School to recite ‘Matilda who told lies’ by Hilaire Belloc. Hungerford Primary School was the first school to perform and recited ‘The Owl and the Pussycat’ by Edward Lear, along with their carefully choreographed hand actions (prompts for the care home residents provided from the front row by Mrs Allen!). After the final performance, the children and residents were treated to a delicious tea during which time the Duchess greeted most of the guests.
Florence Johnson (5C) said ‘It was fun! I was really lucky to stand on the floor next to the residents and the Duchess of Cornwall. I loved the massive cake & we had full glasses of lemonade!’
